Ben sang this song accapella, with no backing track at all and just the accompaniment of a gospel choir.
I personally would have preferred some instruments added to the mix, but Ben put his heart and soul into this performance and it really showed.
The judges said:
Simon Cowell: "Full marks for bravery on that one.....That was very very good."
Louis Walsh: "You are a brave brave mand and you deserve votes!"

I'm sorry and I do not like to say this but I did not like it, I thought he shouted all the way through. His performances tonight were not good, hope he does not suffer because of it.

It took me a while to dwell on it Trudy before I could offer an opinion. I liked it, but I didn't think it was anywhere near his best performance so far.
At least he took a chance with it though.

Yes, but will he live to regret it. I heard that he was advised by one of the voice coaches not to do it, as he was in the last 2 last week because he did not listen to her or Sharon I would have thought he might have listed this week.

Did you hear Sharons link to his performance tonight. She was really clear to point out that the song was not her choice. I liked it but think he might end up in the bottom two again.

This is the first time that I thought Ben did some justice to the song, it would have been so wrong to bring in instruments near to the end, as predictable as how they stand up and walk forward and you often see the warm up guy in the background raising his arms for the audience to react!
But................... the Choir was just simply so amazing, so tight!

Did you hear Sharons link to his performance tonight. She was really clear to point out that the song was not her choice. I noticed that, but she also said in the VT that although she was shocked when Ben told her what song he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it, she agreed that he needed to do something different, take that risk. She and Simon Cowell also gave Ben a standing ovation after, and when the cameras went onto the judges for their opinions, Sharon was blowing him loads of kisses. I personally thought it was an awesome performance. It was very brave to go so much outside the box like that, but it did pay off and he should be highly commended for taking that risk instead of playing safe and staying in his comfort zone. For the record, my favourite of his performance to date is "With A Little Help From My Friends", but this one comes an incredibly close second. Oh, and there was no 'official' bottom two this week as it was just down to public vote. I didn't actually see the show as I was out until quite late (watched Ben's performances when I got home before going to bed!), so I didn't see the Xtra Factor after the results. However, my daughter said that they announced this week who got what votes. She couldn't remember the percentages, but it was Leona first, Ben second and Ray third.

I missed Xtra Factor.....i wanted to know what the pecking order was,i think we should know every week don't you??? After all it's the public vote isn't it?
I quite liked Ben tonight, but here's the funny thing...i don't really know whether i like him or not.Can anyone else identify with this? Some weeks he's seemed great and others he's seemed a teeny bit cocky. I heard what Mrs O said about his song choice. I thought he just might have gone this week.
Has he spoken out of turn and tried to take too much control of his own destiny???

No I don't think he's spoken out of turn (not this week anyway!), but the contestants were told they could do a song of their choosing this week. This was Ben's choice and I'm of the understanding that the arrangement was down to him too. To me, that speaks volumes. He knew it could be the making of his end on the X Factor, but he felt he needed to take that risk and as far as I'm aware, he had Sharon's backing. When he did his sound check for the BM song on Friday, both Sharon and Mark Hudson agreed that he needed to do something like this to stay in the competition. Reading various comments on this performance over the internet, it's been described as Marmite - you either loved it or hated it!!! I can't stand Marmite, but I loved this and grow to love it more each time I listen to it (got the MP3 of it on my computer )

aquality street, I know what you mean I really like him and then he will be arrogant, he is a bit like Jekyl & Hyde. I think this happened last week, he was so surprised to be in the bottom two as if he expects to be in the final. Even this week he come across as a little too sure of himself and that is not good, be confident but not over confident.

Trudy, can I ask where you get your body language reading skills from? Only I think you're way off bat with Ben.
Why do people keep saying he's arrogant and was shocked to be in the bottom two because he expects to win? Do you actually know the guy personally? Only when he's interviewed and does his video blogs and such he comes off as anything but arrogant.
I'm sorry, but if wanting to win this competition makes him arrogant, then so too are Leona, Ray, The MacDonalds, Eton Road, Robert, Nikitta, Ashley, Kerry, Dionne, 4 Sure and The Unconventionals. Not one of them went into this just for a bit of fun.

Everyone goes into it to win and we all form different opinions about people which is why some win and some do not. I get my opinion form watching and listening to him the same as you do and everyone does unless they know him personally, but even when people actually know someone they often still form different opinions. We are all allowed our own opinions and mine differs from yours, I do not get annoyed with you having opinion so please allow me mine.

For me this was Ben's weakest song so far. Great Choir wrong song sounded broken up and disconnected, hardly an acapella performance.
Acapella music is rarely done well by pop artists, classical singers are masters of this style of singing.

Of course we're all entitled to our own opinions, but it's not your opinion about Ben that's really got my goat. It's your direct comment about being so surprised to be in the bottom two the other week. You can't possibly know this. Ben's never said that he was surprised to be there, in fact he said the complete opposite. He's also never said that he expects to be in the final. You've made an assumption, based on your opinion, without ever having met the guy. As I said in the other thread, having an opinion is one thing. Making assumptions, especially when you don't know the person concerned, is totally different.

Saz, Ben said himself he was shocked to be in the bottom two, but it did him good because it gave him a reality check and he knows he has to up his performance, so it was not my assumptions, plus most people make assumptions through what they hear and read and whether its right or wrong its part of life.
