I wonder if the Wasp of the title is White Anglo Saxon Protestants, which is what most of the characters in tonight's episode were. More tea vicar?

Well, until a ginormous wasp busts through a window and tries to attack Donna. Quick thinking as ever, Donna uses magnifying glass and some handy sunbeams to burn the wasp and scare it off temporarily.

Very clever of the writers to tie in with a real event in Christie's life - she really did go missing for 14 days.

Oh - another clever turn in the script - The Doctor gets poisoned. Very funny scene where Christie and Donna try to give him and antidote with him trying to mime the things he needs as an antidote.

I'm summing up a few final thoughts on The Unicorn and the Wasp for a blog post I'm writing.
  • No continuity with the previous episode - the Doctor's Daughter died, remember? Now, I missed the bit before the theme tune, but he didn't seem too subdued during the episode.
  • The episode very accurately mimiced a murder/mystery storyline - lampooning in places, but in a fond manner. Unfortunately, I can't stand murder/mystery stories.
  • There were a couple of nods toward previous storylines - the mention of Charles Dickens reminding us that The Doctor just keeps *bumping* into figures from literature. Then Donna mentions her fiancee getting eaten by a giant spider. Hmmm. Giant spider. Giant wasp. Noticing a giant insect theme here?
  • The cast were great, but the whodunnit descended into utter farce toward the end. Yes, it tied up the Christie link, but a priest who was a long lost adopted alien son? Huh?
  • No obvious continuity with the rest of the series. Come on, where are all the little hints that lead toward the epic season finale?

After the last couple of very strong episodes, this one was a bit weak. But hey, you can't please everybody...

This was just a filler show. Something to add in. At least it wasn't a 'Doctor Lite' story. Yes, the poison bit was brilliant. I loved the tie-ins to other episodes. Of course, this episode was in answer to a few stories ago (shame on me I don't recall which one) where the Doctor mentions he's always wanted to meet Agatha Christie.

I really love that they do historical shows once again. In the old series they started out with that format then gradually got away from it till every, EVERY episode was in space and/or some alien invasion in modern time. You almost forgot he had a TIME machine.

The episode was okay, I loved the mystery bit. I attempted to write a mystery story once myself. Agree, nothing to carry over from the last episode. How far into the show did you miss?

Not as much discussion about this episode. I guess overall it's got mixed reviews.
What about the clips from next week?

Stay out of the shadows. Good rule of thumb to live by anyway.

Not much to say really. As you said above, it's a filler episode. No great clues to the series story arc, and I'm not a fan of Agatha Christie, so it's a bit of a conversation stopper.

I never got to watch that clip on iPlayer. OK, I just did. Nothing special to report. I'm very surprised that the 'Jenny' storyline just ended there. The Doctor did seem to be very emotional when the last episode ended.

Jeff, do you ever watch the Doctor Who Confidential episodes?

I do watch the confidential from time to time. But not always. I guess it depends on how motivated I am.
I agree, I hated how they just dropped the 'Jenny' points.

As for not continuing the story arc. My thought on that was odd how this was a giant hornet, and in our time the bees are disappearing. It might just be related...

It all ultimately ends up in another Dalek plot from what I've heard....

But seriously well spotted. Sometimes I miss these details because the kids chatter non-stop throughout the episode.
