Remember in the book/movie High Fidelity, the lead character (forget his name) used to completely reorganise his record collection when he was stressed out. It really does have theraputic value.

What I want to know is - how do you organise your record collection?

My way has always been strictly alphabetical - by artist first, then by album title. However...on computer, I prefer to see my collection by artist alphabetically, then by album chronologically.

Just wondering what way you guys do it...what way do you manage your music?

I have just done this with my albums as I was fed up with having to look through them all to find the one I want. They are in alphabetical order of artist, never thought about putting them in order after that, good idea, would do it by album title I would never be able to remember the year.

I put mine in order according to genre first, then by artist names.
My main genre is rock, then I have jazz, light music, funny albums, World albums, then misc.

I have a shelf on my bookshelf full of CD's (mess) and three layered cd rack full of cd's (mess)... and when it come to finding a CD it's terrible lol! I really want to organise it but can't be bothered lol... I did start buying music off iTunes for a while but that's quite annoying because it's all backed up on DVD's - never mind the DRM lol.

Basically as all my music is in my PC I just tend to ignore the mess of CD's lol...

Oooh I also have some casettes on my bookshelf too (aswell as a few records on the floor next to it) does anyone else still have casettes?

Even little old me has got rid of her cassettes, in fact last week I sorted out my videos for the charity shop as we no longer use the video. Though I do admit to having boxes of vinyl lp's & singles in my loft.

I don't organise my record collection any more. But when I was in high school, I had the most massive cassette collection ever, made up of my own, my parents' and my big sis's music. It included artists like David Bowie, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Seal, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, Meatloaf, Prince...a lot of people who made massive comebacks at the time and then kind of disappeared again. I was always loaning out albums to my friends, kinda like a library, so what I eventually ended up doing was *cataloguing* all my cassettes. They weren't just in alphbetical order of artist and album title - I'm talking masking tape stuck to the cover of each cassette with a code on it so I could figure out who had what and for how long! Talk about OCD, huh? Wish I'd known that the death of the cassette album was just around the corner!

Ok, I know this will be a shock to you all, but I think perhaps my foolproof storage system that I explained above may be slightly flawed... I went to get a CD (Hot Chip) and... I can't find it Undecided...

Can't believe my fantastically bad CD storage system has failed me Sad

...(seriously, I'm irritated about this because it's not even on my PC!)

Hello Gerard,

I think mine is organised chaos.

Genre than alphabetical by artist for CD's and records. On display in the bedroom welsh dresser like books.
Plus 3 Cd short stackers full on bedside coffee table top and one short stacker starting in living room next to hi-fi.
Records in stroage box with percussion instruments aswell in living room welsh dresser (pop, jaz and musicals etc) some records in case portfolios at the side of bedroom welsh dresser.(classical only)

My music books and sheet music are in a rough order of Genre. Problem is I have so many.

A box full of musical scrores in bottom of my bedroom welsh dresser. Loose music book pile (classical and folk) with percussion instruments in the living room welsh dresser. A storage box full of sheet music (every Genre you can think of )  underneath my bedside coffee table, The piano stool 3 draws full of piano music.  Two draws full of music books in my white draws.(Mainly pop and small section on classical) (Getting myself a pine set as draws feel loose with weight of books.) Can't remember how many books or music sheets just lots of them.

Love music and passionate about singing.

Maureen
Ageing tart.

I call it organised chaos but I can always find what I need.

Alphabetically by album artist, then chronologically for the title where there's more than one. That's for named artists, groups etc, then compilations are arranged by genre, then title. Singles are in artist order, 7" and 12" vinyl are also alphabetical by artist. Cassettes are shoved in a box at the minute, awaiting sorting, but I really can't bear to get rid of some of them and could really do with getting then ripped to the hard drive via a usb converter, but haven't managed to get hold of one yet. Same with the vinyl really... Alphabetical is the way forward, as I have hundreds of CD's, so my old method of just flinging it in a pile (usually in the wrong box!) really isn't practical...

I have boxes of vinyls in my loft, I keep saying I'll get rid of them but there are so many memories with a lot of them that I cannot bring myself to do it. One day.
