Hi everyone!

I was having a conversation with my friend on Saturday about CD's... and whether or not they have become useless.

Picture the scene your in your favourite music shop you buy a CD go home... then what do you do?

Your most likely going to reply "Import it into the PC ofcourse!" then what? It'll sit on the shelf...

If that is you then your not alone infact everyone who has an MP3 player is the same although some of them will use a CD player too...

However, it's not just that we also have many legitimate sources for music on the internet too! iTunes and Napster for example. So with the online download services where you can download an album in minutes this further decreases the use for cd's!

So, the question I'm asking you is:

Do you buy CD's: and if so how do you use them?
If not how do you buy your music?
Do you think CD's have become useless or obsolete?
Anything else?

Personally although I made this thread I am all for CD's... you have a hard backup copy so that if ever you lose the digital copy the CD's still there. I think that CD's are therefore highly valuable and even if it's a case of importing then storing at least it'll always be there as a back up - or ofcourse any time you want to play the actual CD. You can also sell CD's too something that you can't with a digital download.

whats the headline and I'll search it up Smiley

I can see some benefits with this idea but also negatives... e.g. the CD Cases are made of plastic which is bad for enviroment... A negative excluding losing the digital album would also be... why go to a music store to download an album when you can do it at home...

I now it is the norm now to have a Computer I do know of quite a few people who don't, and yet they still love music. If they got rid of CD's how would they buy music.

I used to love CD and spent hours reading the inlay cards - who wrote the song, what guitar/drum endorsements the musicians had, who they thanked. I always thought it was ironic that the hair metallers singing about sex, drugs and rock n roll usually thanked God somewhere on the inlay...but I digress.

These days, I just want to hear the music. Not sure if digital formats like MP3s detract from the experience, because I remember becoming completely immersed in the album in a way that's not possible today.

Don't get rid of the CD's we don't all like modern technology. I much prefer listening to CD's than my MP3 player, I only use it if I don't want to watch what everyone else is watching.

I'm another collector of CD's. I have an Ipod, but for me there is nothing like sticking in a CD and going over my collection to find something to listen to. I love have a CD shelf and displaying my music. Plus, there is always some chance of quality degrading slightly when you switch to Ipod or load into your computer.

I'm not an audiophile, so I don't mind losing a little bit of sound quality for the sake of convenience. The thing with iTunes (or any digital library) is that sometimes scanning your CD rack and seeing a cover gives you a 'feeling' about the album. Sometimes that feeling isn't there when scanning a collection of MP3s

Hi everyone,

I hadn't thought about being able to go through your CD collection... this is something that can be fun and so far something we are unable to do with our digital libraries. Apple has attempted to emulate the act of looking through a CD collection - called 'cover flow' I think - however no matter how hard these companies try I think this wil be one of the factors that will keep cd's valuable.
